Co-operative Group Activity The creation of the US Map is an in-class activity that will be shared by four different groups; construction workers, cartographers, artists, and data collectors. Your individual group assignment is stated at the top of the page. Collaboration is a big part of this activity and asking for help and giving help is expected. Your group will begin by first reading the checklist below, then electing a team leader and lastly, assigning duties to team members that will ultimately lead to completing the group task. Remember, your team focus is just one piece to the big puzzle—US Map. Accuracy is important. If your team provides incorrect information or does not collaborate effectively with another team, the completed class map will be inaccurate and the errors will reflect on the final class grade. You will receive a class grade and an individual grade for this activity. Part 2: Teams will be completing their work at different times based on their assignments. When you are finished with your team task, go directly to the Geography Handbook in the textbook, page 2-21. Your assignment is to read and answer the twenty questions in a statement format. Geography Handbook questions DIRECTIONS: Read the Geography Handbook and answer the following questions. Questions should be answers using the statement format of restating the question and then adding your answer. 1. What is a region? 2. What are the six regions of the United States? 3. What are the commonalities of these areas that bring them together as a region? In other words, how would you describe the land, climate, vegetation etc. that they share? 4. Name and describe the three types of maps. 5. List and define the eight things needed for reading a map. 6. What is GPS? 7. Provide a real life example for the use of GPS. Is this useful? Why or why not? 8. What is latitude and how are they measured? 9. What is longitude and how are they measured? 10. What are the coordinates for Jacksonville, FL. 11. What is a hemisphere? 12. How many hemispheres are there? 13. What continent can be found on four hemispheres? 14. Look at the map on page 11. Give this special purpose map a title and explain. 15. What are the five themes of geography? 16. What is human geography? 17. What themes of geography closely relate to human geography? Why? 18. What are some reasons why people move from place to place? Explain. 19. Why do you think the majority of the Native American tribes lived in the middle and eastern regions of North America? 20. How do you think the western movement of people across North America affected the balance of Native Americans tribes and the land? NOTE: Three blocks have been given to this assignment, to complete the map and the geography handbook question. However, completion time will vary depending on assignments. Any time left to your team will be used to prepare for your timed Raft Essay Assessment.
